This striking Jug stands out for its meticulously hand painted cobalt blue decorations. This Kendi with this lobed form and design are extremely unusual, and no other closely related example appears to have been published.
It is a large format measuring: I foot or 12 inches tall ( 30 cm) with a diameter of 8.50 inches (22 cm).
Blue and white Kendi were produced exclusively for export to the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and a small number found their way to Europe. Blue and white wares of this type were produced at non-official kilns in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, which were not under strict Imperial supervision. As a result some innovative and original designs were created, as exemplified by this piece with the handle.
Despite its widespread popularity, versatility and longevity, the history of the kendi is fraught with unanswered questions, lacunae in knowledge of development and distribution, and the lack of a standardised definition of the form, which gives rise to misconceptions. The history is very interesting indeed. Chinese hand painted porcelain Kendi, Qing Period Dynasty,Asian Ceramic, Kendi Vessel, Vintage Chinese Blue and White Porcelain, wine jug.
