A very good looking 19th C. lidded Japanese Imari jar with a flame shaped topped finial. The jar is hand painted in an elaborate traditional Imari floral pattern and has lovely gold coloured embossed outlines pattern on the body and lid.
It measures 4.50 inches tall with a diameter of 3.50 inches Beautiful piece with no cracks or loss of colour.
History of the maker's mark:
"Saji" seems to be a name, one possibility is that it is just referring to the Japanese name for Seji" = Celadon. Best guess from looking, is a Seto/Nagoya or perhaps Yokohama product. Regarding date, it is generally accepted that marks that includes "Dai Nippon" in Japanese characters on the whole date to the Meiji (1868-1912) period, reflecting the greatly increased nationalism of that period. In this case a likely period is 1910-30.
