This is a finely hand-carved Chinese bamboo scholars brush pot or bitong which we date to the mid-19th century of the Qing dynasty, circa 1850, but could be earlier. Shaped and carved from a section of bamboo timber - a natural growth node forms the recessed base.
One face is finely carved with a detailed landscape. With a scene of a scholar, mountains, rivers and a deeply wooded rocky landscape. Village scene of man by river with houses and boats with a view of a pagoda.
Height – 4.75" (12.00 cm). Weight - 204 grams. Condition - Very Good. The usual minor shrinkage cracks. No major splits or chips. No restoration. Natural color and patina.
